Teletherapy is therapy done remotely with the help of various technological devices. Teletherapy can be
-synchronous (real time, e.g. video counseling or phone counseling) or
-asychronous (delayed response, e.g. using email or chat for counseling).

If you are contemplating teletherapy, I have listed some benefits and limitations that may help you decide if this is the right option for you.

Benefits
Teletherapy is just as effective as in-person therapy when sought with a licensed professional. Some benefits include
Lower Cost & Time: Accessing teletherapy can save both on the time and the cost related to commuting. It is also easier for therapists to provide serices at a lower cost due to less overhead expenses.
Easier access: Therapy can be accessed despite geographical barriers, physical disabilities, scheduling concerns, and lack of time.
Privacy: You no longer have to risk bumping into someone at the waiting room
Public Health Crisis: Teletherapy allows you to access mental health services without interruptions especially during a public health crisis such as Covid-19, where physical distancing is necessary.
-Scheduling: There is more flexibility in scheduling.
Comfort: Working from a familiar setting, such as your home, makes it easier to engage in the therapy progress.

Limitations
Before seeking teletherapy, some caution needs to be exercised; it is not for everyone.
Environment: For many, it is difficult to find privacy at home. This is especially true for individuals who live with larger families, are caregivers/parents/guardians who are shouldering responsibility constantly.
Technical Difficulties: Access to a strong internet connection and/or a device can make it harder or impossible to access therapy online. Technological know how can also get in the way.
Communication Barriers: People have different preferences for therapy. Some clients prefer in-person therapy, while others prefer teletherapy. It may be harder to gauge nonverbal cues online. Technological glitches may also affect communication.
-Client issues: If you have severe mental health issues such as schizophrenia, personality disorders, or high suicide risk, this may not be the right platform for you.

Things to consider before seeking Teletherapy
-Make sure to have access to a strong internet connection, a secure device, and headphones
-Have a distraction free environment, and a private space
-Check in with your therapist if the platform that they are using is PHIPA and PIPEDA compliant, which means they are using platforms that complies with provincial laws regarding the protection of personal health information
-If your therapist is from a different geographical area, check if they are allowed to practice in that area. Different provinces have different regulations that need to be followed.
-Take advantage of a free consultation to see how if this is something that works for you
-Clarify all your concerns with the therapist.
-If you are new to teletherapy, ask your therapist if they can do a trial run with you to help you get acquainted with the online platform they use.
